Sarah McDowall (Masters in Cello, RCM, London)

Sarah graduated in June 2006 with a Masters Degree in Advanced Performance (Cello) from the Royal College of Music in London. In 2005 she gained Distinctions for both her performance and academic work and has achieved another set of excellent results in 2006. She now holds 7 diplomas and degrees in cello, voice and teaching. At 21, Sarah was one of the youngest music teachers in New Zealand to be given the AIRMT qualification as a registered music teacher. She has taken part in Masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, Frans Helmerson and Johannes Goritzki.

Sarah has been a three-time finalist in New Zealand's Young Performer of the Year awards, and was a semi-finalist (one of eight chosen from all over New Zealand) in the televised competition, the Young Musician of the Year.

Before moving to London, she was a regular recording artist for short films and advertisements. She has toured the North Island of New Zealand with Prestige Productions, (Gina Sanders' professional opera/classical music company).

Sarah has now performed solos in Australia, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, England, America and, of course, New Zealand, where she is already in demand as a recitalist, and gave a private performance for the Friends of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra for Julian Lloyd Webber. In March 2005 she opened a concert starring Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in Blenheim Palace, Oxford.

In January 2005, Sarah was delighted to be appointed to the position of Director, Junior Choir at St Michael and All Angels Church in Chiswick. The children in the choir, aged 7 to 15, sing once a month in the Church and also for special services. Each year they put on a major production as part of the annual Bedford Park Festival. Sarah has now produced and directed for them "Wizard of Oz" and "Wind in the Willows" which they performed in June 2005 & 2006 respectively. The children also sang in a concert with both Sarah and her cousin Gina Sanders in the Church. Sarah also has 12 private students in London learning cello, singing, violin and piano. She is also Director of another Junior Choir at Fulham.

Sarah was a member of the Royal College of Music's Chamber Choir during her time there, and she is also a member of the choir at All Saints in Fulham, touring with them to Italy in 2005. She travelled to Denmark with yet another adult choir, and was in Italy to lead the cello section for the orchestra accompanying an international children's choir of several hundred singers at a summer school in 2006.

She will be returning for concerts in New Zealand in August and September. Download the flyer for the August 12 and 13 concert with Gina here.
